Obituary
Wilma Jean Grier Still, the seventh child of Johnny William Grier and Anna Spivey Grier, was born November 9, 1959 in Columbia, Alabama. She passed from this life peacefully on Tuesday, February 1, 2022 at Extendicare Health Center in Dothan, Alabama.
After graduating from Early County High School in 1977, Wilma attended the University of Georgia. Upon graduation with a degree in Statistics, she accepted a job at the National Security Agency (NSA) in Maryland.
Wilma grew up in Ebenezer A.M.E. Church and accepted Christ at an early age. Upon moving to Maryland, she joined St. Stephens A.M.E. Church and was active until her health would not allow her to attend. In 2003, she moved back to Blakely and reunited with Ebenezer A.M.E. Church.
In 1988, Wilma was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS). She continued to work and be active with her church and sorority, Zeta Phi Beta, until several MS episodes impacted her mobility. Soon thereafter, her work career ended and her other activities became limited. Even when MS weakened her body, Wilma’s mind remained sharp. She could recall phone numbers and addresses without much trouble at all.
In 1997, Wilma met and married Hamilton Still. They were married in the care facility where they were currently residing. They were able to move to another facility and begin married life. Hamilton and Wilma talked almost every day after she moved back to Blakely. She was deeply saddened when Hamilton passed away in June 2021. Her heart was broken and life for her was not the same.
Wilma loved the Atlanta Braves and the Georgia Bulldogs. In the nursing facilities where she resided, she was known as the sports lover of those teams and the Queen of Bingo!
Wilma maintained lifelong friends from high school, college and work who kept in touch with her over the years. Even when she could not write, the phone became her beacon of light to keeping up with family and friends. Within the last year, when the phone became impossible to navigate, family and friends still called and left messages that were retrieved and played back for her.
Wilma was preceded in death by her parents, husband, one nephew, Grier Justin Inmon, and a brother-in-law, David L. Smylie I.
She leaves to cherish her memory nine (9) siblings: Annie McCelvy (Roderick) of Fort Walton Beach, Florida, Agnes Gilmore (Rufus) and Patricia Grier of Huntsville, Alabama, Bonatha Inmon (Richard) of Brooksville, Florida, Vellry Grier and Tonya Grier of Dothan, Alabama, Jacquelyn Grier of Winter Park, Florida, Judy Grier Smylie of Randallstown, Maryland, and Johnny B.
